Use the working direct connection as a comparison. If the same Apple TV output succeeds directly on the television but fails through a receiver or switch, inspect that additional HDMI path and its supported formats.

Why this happens
An intermediary adds another input, cable and format negotiation. Direct playback narrows the failure without proving which intermediary component is responsible.
Work through the steps
- Record the working TV input and Apple TV format.
- Connect Apple TV directly to that TV input and verify playback.
- Reconnect the receiver using its documented input and output.
- Test a format supported by every component in that chain.
What to avoid
Do not repeatedly force an unreadable video format. Change one cable or setting at a time and preserve the working direct configuration.
Know what changed
The receiver path should reproduce the same stable picture and sound. If it cannot, report the receiver model and exact output format rather than only the player name.
