Compare the programme through the television speakers and the intended receiver. Apple TV audio settings, receiver capabilities and the programme's audio track can differ from the simple sound used by the menus.

Why this happens
A working HDMI picture or menu sound does not establish support for every surround format. Output selection and format compatibility are separate checks.
Work through the steps
- Verify the TV and receiver are not muted.
- Check the selected audio output on Apple TV.
- Play the same programme through TV speakers.
- Use Apple's audio-format guidance for the connected equipment and retest.
What to avoid
Keep volume low when switching outputs. Do not assume a silent track can be repaired by renewing a subscription.
Know what changed
Audio should play through the intended output on the same programme. If another programme works, record which track and title fail before changing the entire system.
