Legacy Chromecast is different from Chromecast with Google TV

Practical steps, clear explanations and a useful place to start.

Identify the exact Chromecast model before following an app installation guide. A legacy Chromecast receives supported Cast sessions from another device; Chromecast with Google TV has an app-based television interface and a different setup workflow.

Why this happens

The shared Chromecast name covers different product types. A receiver without Google TV does not gain an app store from an IPTV subscription.

Work through the steps

  1. Find the device model in its settings or product information.
  2. Confirm whether it has the Google TV interface.
  3. Use Cast instructions for a receiver-only model.
  4. Use the Google TV app guide only for a Google TV model.

What to avoid

Do not search for a native app installer on a legacy receiver. No Android APK can add a Google TV interface to that hardware.

Know what changed

The setup path should match the actual model. A working Cast-capable sender app is required when using a receiver-only Chromecast.
