A VPN changes Chromecast discovery on the sender

Practical steps, clear explanations and a useful place to start.

Review whether the VPN permits local-network access. Compare discovery using its documented local-network option or a brief permitted connection test, keeping the Chromecast and Wi-Fi unchanged.

Why this happens

Some VPN configurations route or block local discovery traffic. That affects finding the receiver even while ordinary websites still open.

Work through the steps

  1. Confirm the sender and receiver share the local network.
  2. Read the VPN's local-network or LAN-access guidance.
  3. Apply its supported local-access setting if available.
  4. Retest discovery in the same known Cast-enabled app.

What to avoid

Do not disable firewalls or install a VPN solely to force playback. Respect the network's managed-device rules.

Know what changed

If discovery changes with the supported VPN setting, document that relationship. If no supported app finds the receiver either way, investigate Wi-Fi and receiver configuration next.
