A Wi-Fi-only iPad cannot stream away from the router

Practical steps, clear explanations and a useful place to start.

Confirm whether the iPad model has cellular capability. A Wi-Fi-only model needs an available Wi-Fi connection or another supported internet-sharing arrangement when away from the normal network; buying a streaming plan does not add a mobile radio.

Why this happens

Wi-Fi-only hardware and Wi-Fi plus cellular hardware connect differently. The player cannot create an internet connection that the device does not have.

Work through the steps

  1. Identify the iPad model and cellular capability.
  2. Check for a working Wi-Fi connection.
  3. Open a normal webpage to confirm internet access.
  4. Test the player once connectivity is restored.

What to avoid

Check any hotspot data allowance before streaming. Do not confuse a saved Wi-Fi network name with a currently working internet connection.

Know what changed

A browser and the player should both reach the internet through the chosen connection. If browsing works but playback fails, investigate the specific player or source next.
