Linux player has audio but a black video surface

Practical steps, clear explanations and a useful place to start.

Compare sources and review the verified player's decoding guidance. If it offers a documented hardware-decoding option, test one change at a time. Driver and codec support depends on the distribution and hardware, so a universal command is inappropriate.

Why this happens

The playback engine, graphics driver and source format can fail at different stages. Continuing sound is a useful symptom but does not identify one cause.

Work through the steps

  1. Test a second known working source.
  2. Record player, distribution and graphics hardware versions.
  3. Check supported updates through the normal package channel.
  4. Compare a documented decoding setting and retest the original source.

What to avoid

Avoid random codec scripts or unsupported driver repositories. Do not claim a setting exists in every Linux player.

Know what changed

A useful result shows whether the issue follows one source or one rendering setting. Preserve the working setting and include exact versions in a support report.
