Linux player audio goes to the wrong sound device

Practical steps, clear explanations and a useful place to start.

Use the distribution's sound controls to inspect the active output while the player runs. HDMI, built-in speakers and USB or Bluetooth audio may appear separately, and the application may have its own output choice.

Why this happens

An available sound device is not necessarily the selected media destination. Ubuntu's sound guidance illustrates the checks; other distributions may name them differently.

Work through the steps

  1. Check the player volume and mute control.
  2. Open the distribution's Sound settings.
  3. Select the intended output and test it.
  4. Compare the same player source with a second application.

What to avoid

Keep volume low when switching outputs. Do not replace the whole audio stack as the first response to one muted player.

Know what changed

Audio should work through the selected device. If system tests succeed but one source stays silent, inspect the player's available audio tracks and report the difference.
