Select the intended sound output in macOS while a programme plays. A Mac connected to a monitor, television or Bluetooth headphones may send audio somewhere different from where the picture appears.

Why this happens
Display selection and sound output are separate controls. A connected HDMI display does not necessarily become the active audio destination.
Work through the steps
- Check the player's volume and mute state.
- Open macOS Sound output settings.
- Select the intended HDMI, speaker or Bluetooth output.
- Play the same programme and compare a second app.
What to avoid
Keep volume low when switching outputs. A display without speakers cannot produce sound merely because it accepts HDMI video.
Know what changed
The source should become audible through the chosen device. If another app works but the player stays silent, inspect its output and available audio tracks.
