Network addresses and naming

IP address

An Internet Protocol address identifies an interface or endpoint for communication within the relevant network arrangement. A device can have different addresses for different interfaces or protocols. Its local address and the address visible to an internet service may differ because of routing and translation, so one displayed address does not describe the whole connection.

IPv4

Internet Protocol version 4 is an addressing and packet-delivery protocol widely used on networks. Home networks often combine IPv4 private addressing with translation for internet access. Its role is separate from account credentials, media codecs or programme permissions, and an application may use IPv4 even when other parts of the same device support IPv6.

IPv6

Internet Protocol version 6 is an IP protocol with a much larger address space than IPv4 and its own packet structure and networking arrangements. Networks and applications can support both versions, sometimes choosing different paths. IPv6 capability therefore needs to work across the relevant client, access network and destination rather than only appearing in one device's settings.

Public IP address

A public IP address is an address used in globally routable internet communication. The address a service sees can belong to a home connection, a shared provider arrangement or another intermediary, rather than one individual device. It can change over time and should be interpreted as connection information rather than a reliable personal identity.

Private IP address

A private IP address is used within a local addressing arrangement rather than being directly routable as a public internet destination. Such addressing lets a home network organise its devices internally. A router or another gateway commonly connects that local network onward, often using address translation for IPv4 internet communication on behalf of local devices.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol can supply a device with network configuration, including an address and other relevant connection information. It reduces the need to enter each setting manually. Obtaining a lease helps establish local configuration, but it does not prove that every internet resource, DNS lookup or account login will subsequently work from the device.

Gateway

A gateway connects one network or communication arrangement to another. In a typical home setup, the default gateway is the router a device uses for destinations outside its local network. Reaching that gateway and reaching a remote media service are different stages, so a working local connection does not establish complete internet or service access.

DNS

The Domain Name System resolves names to records used by applications, including addresses for hosts. It helps a player locate a named service but does not carry the programme video itself. A DNS problem can stop a hostname resolving, while successful resolution still leaves routing, secure connection and account authorization as separate stages of access.

DNS cache

A DNS cache keeps previously obtained name-resolution information for reuse under applicable caching rules. It can reduce repeated lookups, but stored information may briefly differ from a newly changed record elsewhere. Caches can exist at several layers, so restarting one application does not necessarily clear every resolver or device cache involved in reaching a service.

NAT

Network address translation changes addressing information as traffic passes between network arrangements. In a common home IPv4 setup, it helps several private devices communicate through an outward-facing connection. Translation is separate from the subscription and player, although it can influence how some connections are established or how remote services observe a household's traffic.
