STREAMING GLOSSARY

MPEG-DASH: Meaning & Practical Example

A clear definition, an everyday example and the mistake to avoid.

MPEG-DASH is an adaptive streaming system in which a media presentation description tells the player how to obtain timed pieces of media. It can describe different qualities, audio tracks and other presentation components. The standard defines delivery structure; actual playback still requires compatible codecs, software and access to the media.

A practical example

A player reading a DASH presentation may select a video representation for the screen and a separate audio representation for the preferred language. It then requests the corresponding pieces of media rather than downloading one complete film before starting.

A common misunderstanding

DASH support does not automatically mean that every DASH source will play. A device may lack a codec, required protection mechanism or player feature used by a particular presentation.
