Traceroute is a diagnostic method that attempts to reveal responding network hops toward a destination. Implementations and networks handle the probes differently, and some routers do not answer consistently. It can offer route clues, but intermediate response timing or missing replies do not automatically show where application traffic is being lost or delayed along the path.

A practical example
A support team may compare traces taken during working and failing periods to look for a route change. The final destination's behaviour and actual application tests still matter because some intermediate devices deprioritise the diagnostic probes while forwarding other traffic normally.
A common misunderstanding
Do not blame a router merely because one line shows a high delay or no reply. Interpret the complete test and its limitations, preferably alongside other evidence from the affected connection.
