An app version identifies a particular release of an application. Different releases can change features, fixes, compatibility or interface details, and platform editions may not share identical numbering. Recording the version helps make support reports reproducible; an app name alone can be too broad when instructions or behaviour changed between releases on the same device.

A practical example
A guide may describe a setting introduced after the release installed on a viewer's television. Comparing the actual version and platform edition explains why the expected control is missing without assuming that the user overlooked it in the menu.
A common misunderstanding
Do not assume the newest release on one platform is available everywhere at the same time. Store availability, rollout timing and device compatibility can produce legitimate differences between installations.
