EPG

An electronic programme guide shows schedule information associated with channels, such as programme titles and start times. A player usually obtains that information separately from the media stream and matches it to channel entries. Guide completeness, timing and detail depend on the data source, matching identifiers, update process and player interpretation.

XMLTV

XMLTV is a widely used XML-based format for television listings. It describes channels and programme information that compatible tools can exchange. A player can use an XMLTV file or address as one source for its guide, but matching identifiers and correctly interpreted times remain necessary for the listings to appear where expected.

Programme start time

A programme start time is the scheduled beginning of an item in guide data or a published timetable. It must be interpreted with its time zone or offset. This is separate from the moment a viewer receives the programme through a delayed stream, and separate again from the device's local clock settings.

UTC

Coordinated Universal Time is a shared time reference used in many technical systems. A schedule, log or message can store a time in UTC and display it in the viewer's local zone. The local offset can depend on location and date, while UTC itself does not follow a country's daylight-saving clock changes.

Time zone

A time zone defines how local civil time relates to a reference such as UTC, including applicable historical or seasonal rules. Devices, programme data and support teams may use different zones. Correctly interpreted zones make schedules and incident reports comparable without assuming that every person or service shares the same clock setting.

Daylight saving time

Daylight saving time is a seasonal adjustment used in some locations to change local civil time relative to standard time. Its application depends on the jurisdiction and date. Devices or guide systems that use current zone rules can account for it, while fixed manual offsets may become wrong after a clock change.

Guide offset

A guide offset is a manual or configured adjustment to the times displayed from programme data. It can help when a source's schedule is consistently shifted, but it should be applied only after checking the device clock, time zone and data interpretation. A correct offset for one source may be wrong for another.

Catch-up TV

Catch-up TV lets a viewer request some programmes after their original transmission when the service, programme rights and player support that facility. It differs from simply having an electronic guide: listings can exist without a replay source. Available channels, programme coverage and replay periods depend on the specific service and content arrangement.

Timeshift

Timeshift describes viewing a programme at a different time from its current live position. Depending on the system, this can involve pausing buffered live content, a local recording or a server-provided archive. These arrangements have different limits, so a player's pause button does not establish a universal ability to rewind every live stream.

Archive retention

Archive retention is the period for which stored programmes, recordings or related media remain available in a particular system. It can vary by channel, programme, storage policy and service arrangement. Retention is separate from a subscription's expiry date and from how far back an electronic guide happens to display schedule entries.
