Ethernet provides wired network communication between compatible equipment, commonly through a router or network switch in a home. A suitable cable connection can remove the wireless link from a viewing test, although the internet service and media server remain involved. Actual performance depends on the ports, cable, negotiation and other devices along the connection.

A practical example
A television connected by cable may play steadily where its weak Wi-Fi connection struggled. That comparison can isolate a local wireless contribution without proving that the subscription or internet provider changed, because the same programme and account can be used for both tests.
A common misunderstanding
Wired does not automatically mean unlimited or maximum speed. An older port, damaged cable or negotiated link can impose a limit, and upstream congestion can still affect playback.
