Expiry date: Meaning & Practical Example

A clear definition, an everyday example and the mistake to avoid.

An expiry date marks when a particular entitlement, account state or resource is scheduled to end. Its meaning depends on what is expiring: a service term, app licence, token or trial can each have separate dates. Time zone and renewal processing can also matter when interpreting the exact final access time shown by a system.

A practical example

A customer can have an active streaming term while a third-party player licence reaches its own expiry. A screenshot showing one date therefore needs context before support can determine which product requires renewal or a configuration change in the viewing setup.

A common misunderstanding

Do not extend assumptions from one displayed date to every linked product. Record the date, time zone and the system that shows it, particularly when several independent licences or accounts are involved.
