A focus indicator shows which control currently receives keyboard, remote or other non-pointer input. A visible indicator helps a viewer understand where the next select or directional action will apply. Its clarity depends on application design, contrast and interaction behaviour; focus is separate from a mouse pointer or a permanently selected channel entry.

A practical example
When navigating a television app with a remote, a border or highlight can show the active button before the viewer presses Select. Losing that highlight can make the interface difficult to operate even while the app and stream remain technically functional.
A common misunderstanding
A colourful hover effect is not always a usable focus indicator. Ensure the remote or keyboard can reach controls and the active position remains clear without relying on a mouse.
