STREAMING GLOSSARY

HDR: Meaning & Practical Example

A clear definition, an everyday example and the mistake to avoid.

High dynamic range video can represent a wider range of brightness and, depending on the format, associated colour information than conventional standard dynamic range arrangements. Playback needs a compatible source, decoding path and display. An HDR-capable television does not make every programme HDR or guarantee that every picture mode will present it well.

A practical example

A television may enter an HDR mode for one supported film and return to an SDR mode for a news stream. The difference reflects the received presentation and playback path, rather than the television losing its HDR capability between programmes.

A common misunderstanding

Do not force every source into HDR merely because the screen supports it. Incorrect conversion or signalling can produce a picture that looks washed out, overly dark or otherwise unlike the intended presentation.
