STREAMING GLOSSARY

Speed test: Meaning & Practical Example

A clear definition, an everyday example and the mistake to avoid.

A speed test measures selected network transfer characteristics between a testing device and a particular test service under the current conditions. It can help examine capacity or performance, but it is not a direct measurement of every media server or a guarantee of sustained evening delivery. The device, connection type, destination and time are important context for its result.

Television and portable devices illustrating a home streaming setup.

A practical example

A viewer testing on the television over its usual Wi-Fi examines a different path from a laptop connected by cable near the router. Recording both can reveal a local wireless difference without assuming the subscription's media server was part of either measurement.

A common misunderstanding

Do not diagnose all buffering from one fast or slow result. Pair measurements with the actual symptom and controlled comparisons, and avoid comparing different devices as though every condition were identical.
