A service set identifier is the name used to identify a Wi-Fi network to users and compatible devices. Several access points can advertise the same SSID, and a router may use one name across supported frequency bands. The visible name alone therefore does not reveal the exact radio connection, access point or internet route being used.

A practical example
A television may reconnect automatically to a saved network name after a router is replaced. If the new network uses different security or connection arrangements, confirming the actual saved connection can be more useful than relying only on the familiar name shown.
A common misunderstanding
Two networks can share a similar or identical name without being the same trusted network. Verify the intended access point and security details rather than joining an unfamiliar name casually.
