Stereo uses two audio channels, normally presented as left and right. A stereo source or output differs from a multichannel arrangement, but its perceived quality still depends on the recording, encoding, speakers and listening environment. A player may receive stereo directly or create a stereo downmix from another supported track when that function is available.

A practical example
A viewer using television speakers may choose a supported stereo output for clear, predictable sound. Another household using a receiver may prefer an available multichannel path, but choosing stereo does not alter the programme's video resolution or internet delivery method.
A common misunderstanding
Two connected speakers do not necessarily reveal how the original track was encoded. Equipment can downmix or apply processing, so distinguish source channels, output settings and the final listening arrangement.
