Storage retains applications, files and other data beyond an individual running session. Its capacity, available space and performance can affect installations, updates and local data handling. Storage is separate from RAM and from a player's temporary media buffer, although applications may use persistent space for caches, downloads or saved settings according to their design.

A practical example
A television with little free storage may be unable to complete an app update while still having enough working memory to run its existing installation. Removing an unneeded file can address capacity, whereas restarting alone does not create permanent free storage.
A common misunderstanding
Do not delete unfamiliar system files or private playlist backups without understanding their role. Review supported storage tools and preserve needed settings before removing persistent application or account data.
