An Android application package is a file format used to distribute software for Android-based environments. A package still has platform, device and other compatibility requirements, and it may come from different distribution channels. Possessing an APK does not establish that its publisher is genuine or that it will operate on every Android device or television.

A practical example
A developer can distribute a suitable Android package through a supported route, while a particular television may need a remote-friendly edition or a different supported application. The installation file alone does not describe every requirement or the user interface it contains.
A common misunderstanding
An APK is not an installer for every smart television or operating system. Do not rename another file to APK or assume a generic download automatically suits a specific model.
